A retirement plan begins with a few useful questions
How much have you already invested? How long can you keep contributing? And what monthly income would you need when work becomes optional? This retirement planning calculator turns those questions into a transparent projection. It connects your starting balance, regular deposits and time horizon, then shows how inflation changes what the final amount might buy.
Start with retirement savings to estimate your future portfolio. Switch to retirement income to explore spending from a portfolio you expect to have at retirement. Use the savings goal mode when you already have a target. The modes share relevant assumptions, so review the labels when you switch: savings inputs describe today, while income inputs describe the start of retirement.
Choosing the right retirement calculator mode
Retirement savings and investment growth
Your total invested includes your starting balance plus future deposits. Investment growth is the difference between that total and the projected balance; it can be negative. Increasing deposits each year can represent a deliberate savings commitment, but it does not ensure that your income will rise enough to afford it. Compare the lower-return scenario before relying on a plan.
Retirement income and portfolio depletion
The retirement income calculator estimates an initial monthly spending level supported by your portfolio and other income over the duration you choose. It also tests your entered expenses separately. The remaining balance and unmet-expense totals refer to your entered spending, not the calculated sustainable level. Both expenses and other income increase with inflation in this simplified model. Actual pensions may increase differently.
A smooth annual return hides market volatility. Losses early in retirement can be especially damaging when withdrawals continue. This deterministic projection does not model that sequence risk, longevity uncertainty, taxes or unexpected costs. A portfolio that lasts in this model is not guaranteed to last in real life.
401(k) retirement calculator
For the United States, model contributions as a percentage of salary and specify your employer’s match formula. The salary cap is the portion of salary eligible for matching; the match rate is what the employer contributes against that eligible amount. For example, a 50% match on contributions up to 6% of salary produces an employer contribution of 3% of salary when the employee contributes at least 6%.
This tool does not enforce contribution limits, catch-up provisions, vesting schedules or tax rules. Check your plan documents and current official guidance before making an election. The starting savings field represents your existing 401(k) balance in this mode.
FIRE and early retirement
The FIRE target divides annual expenses by a chosen withdrawal rate. Annual spending of 36,000 at 4% creates an illustrative target of 900,000 in the same currency. That is arithmetic, not a promised safe withdrawal rule. We compare the target with inflation-adjusted investments at each annual checkpoint through age 100. “Not reached” means the selected assumptions do not reach the target within that horizon.
Inflation and your retirement goal
A future nominal balance tells you the number of currency units in the account. Purchasing power expresses that balance in today’s money. At 2.5% inflation, 100,000 received in 20 years has purchasing power of about 61,027 today. The retirement goal field is a future nominal target. If you start with a target in today’s money, multiply it by (1 + inflation rate) raised to the number of years first.
Planning across countries
The same core investment mathematics is available for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India and Pakistan. The selector changes currency labels and number formatting; it performs no foreign-exchange conversion. Enter all figures in the selected currency and review retained figures after changing countries.
For a retirement calculator USA estimate, you can combine manually entered Social Security, 401(k) and IRA monthly distributions. For retirement calculator UK planning, enter your State Pension and workplace pension estimates. In Canada, use CPP, OAS and RRSP withdrawal estimates. In Australia, use superannuation income and Age Pension estimates. India and Pakistan provide generic pension and other-income fields.
The benefits mode sums your estimates and compares them with monthly expenses. It does not calculate eligibility, statutory benefits or investment returns. Avoid double-counting: if you include a pension-account withdrawal as “other income” in the income mode, do not also include the same assets in the portfolio being drawn down.
Calculation methodology
Return convention: the entered rate is a nominal annual investment return. Monthly return i = annual rate / 12. A 6% input therefore compounds at 0.5% monthly; its effective annual growth is approximately 6.17%. This is different from assuming a 6% effective annual return.
Deposits: end-of-month balance = prior balance × (1 + i) + deposit. For beginning-of-month deposits, balance = (prior balance + deposit) × (1 + i). Deposits increase after each 12-month period. Salary-based contributions and employer matches follow the same timing.
Purchasing power: nominal balance ÷ (1 + annual inflation)years. In income mode, purchasing power is measured at the start of retirement. Monthly withdrawals occur after investment growth, are capped at available funds, and never create a negative portfolio. Unfunded spending accumulates as unmet expenses.
Goal solving: the required starting monthly contribution equals the target minus the future value of existing savings, divided by the future value of a one-unit monthly contribution with the selected timing and annual growth. A target already met by existing savings requires no additional deposits. Sustainable income discounts each future inflation-linked withdrawal at the monthly return. Three scenarios change only the return assumption.
Zero and negative returns are supported. Age inputs and retirement duration use whole years. Annual projections retain full numerical precision internally, with currency rounded only for display. This tool uses a constant return and inflation path and does not calculate fees, tax, eligibility, exchange rates or contribution limits.

Frequently asked questions
How much do I need to retire?
That depends on spending, other income, time in retirement and investment outcomes. Begin with a realistic expense estimate, subtract pension income on a comparable tax basis, and test the remaining need in the income mode. Include irregular costs rather than relying only on normal monthly bills.
Is the default return a recommendation?
No. The default inputs are examples. Choose assumptions suited to your circumstances and compare several outcomes. Higher returns generally involve uncertainty; no result is guaranteed.
Does changing country convert my savings?
No. Values are retained and relabelled in the selected currency. A notice reminds you to review them. Country-specific pension estimates reset to zero because different benefit systems are not interchangeable.
Does the calculator include taxes or pension eligibility?
No. It calculates investment projections and manually entered income estimates. It does not determine entitlement or net-of-tax payments. Use consistent before-tax or after-tax income and expense figures, and check official statements for benefit amounts.
Why is my savings goal contribution different from my current deposit?
The goal mode solves for a new deposit amount. Your current monthly contribution is retained for other modes, but the goal-mode projection uses the solved contribution shown in the result.
Can I save my retirement report?
Download the annual projection as a CSV, or select Print / Save as PDF and use your browser’s PDF option. The report includes the selected assumptions. There is no account or automatic saving; keep an export before closing the page.
